Can Going To The Gym Make You Smarter? – 5 Ways it Can.

If you think going to the local Philadelphia fitness center is just for body builders and gym rats you need to read more! Did you know that at least 25 minutes of exercise a day can make you smarter, maybe even a genius? Ok, you still might not become the next Thomas Edison but you can improve your overall brain functions significantly. Check out the 5 ways that working out at the gym can make you smarter:

1. More Energy

Simply put, the more you move, the more energized you will feel. This is because consistent physical activity improves your muscle strength and boosts your stamina, giving you the energy you need to think more clear and be creative. Just 20 minutes of moving around, even just around your house, makes your body produce more energy.

2. Improves Focus

Many doctors say that exercise improves your brain in the short term by raising your focus after your workout for two to three hours.  If you have an important job or speech, try working out at the gym before; you’ll be at your best when you have to perform. Long term, exercise can even help hold off brain aging and Alzheimer’s. This works on the cellular level and the ability of the brain to improve itself with blood flow. All of this comes from regular exercise at your local fitness center!

3. Improves Mood

Exercise releases endorphins, also known as mother nature’s mood enhancer, which has been shown to improve memory. Exercise also releases serotonin, which improves mood and lessens symptoms of depression, according to many medical organizations.  Duke University researchers proved that depressed adults who exercised consistently improved as much as those treated with the antidepressant Zoloft!

4. Enhances Memory

In an experiment published in the journal of the American College of Sports Medicine, their test was to investigate if your brain remembers more when your body is active. Students were asked to memorize a string of letters, and were then allowed to run, lift weights, or sit quietly. The students who ran were quicker and more accurate when they were assessed than students who chose the other two options.

5. Improve Productivity

It’s well known that productivity makes more productivity. When we’re productive and efficient it moves us to succeed even more. After exercising at a health club in the middle of the day, workers have showed they are more likely to be kinder to other employees, increase their performance and improve their time management. All these amount to a more productive day – all from a few minutes of exercise!

You don’t have to be an Olympic athlete to get the brain benefits of exercise. You could simply start by increasing your heart rate on the eliptical at the gym and doing regular exercise.  As always, be on the safe side and consult your doctor before venturing in to any new exercise activities.
